When you go along to a taster session or beginner lesson, you simply need to wear comfortable clothing. Thin layers are ideal, they're easy to move in and you can add to the layers or remove extra, depending on the weather. Flat-soled shoes such as trainers are ideal. Waterproof clothing is also very useful to wear in the wind and cold, as golf is played in all weathers.

Dress codes vary from club-to-club when playing on the course, so check in advance for any special requirements.

Golf has many terms which are unique to the game. You'll find explanations of some of the words used in golf to help you through your new to golf experience here.

There are many rules of the game but the basic principle is simple: play the ball as it lies and play the course as you find it. You can find more information on Rules and Etiquette here.

Tees are the starting point of a golf hole, where you would take your first shot. The teeing area is identified by two coloured markers. The colour will vary and you should pick the tee that is most appropriate for your ability or gender, as they normally relate to the length of hole that you will play, or might be gender specific. Ask your coach or a friend if you are unsure which tee to play from. Many clubs will have short courses which are ideal for beginners.

A golf handicap is a number assigned to you which defines your potential skill/ability level. It gives you an opportunity to play together or compete on a level playing field and enjoy a fair game, no matter your ability. To obtain a handicap you must either be a golf club member or a member of Wales Golf Flexi Club

You don't need to buy a full set of clubs to begin with. There are four key clubs that will get you around the golf course when you first start.

1. Woods - these are the longest clubs in the bag and designed to hit the ball the furthest. The woods are made up of Drivers and Fairway Woods.

2. Irons - these generally start from a 3 iron up to a 9 iron, the lower the number, the greater the potential to hit the ball further.

3. Wedges - these clubs are used when the golf ball hasn't quite made it to the green, designed for shorter shots and higher in the air.

4. Putter - this is a flat faced club desgined to roll the golf ball along the green and into the hole.

Here is a list of suggested items to keep in your golf bag:

  • 14 clubs maximum (however beginners would not need a full set)
  • Towel (to clean clubs)
  • Umbrella and waterproofs
  • Golf balls
  • Tees
  • Ball markers (used if your ball needs to be moved)
  • Pitch marker repairer (used to repair any indentations when your ball lands on the green)
  • Pencil and scorecard
  • Glove
  • Drinks and snacks
